Before Checking

After driving down Highway 34, it will be extremely hot, so be sure to wait a couple of hours before opening up the hood. Next, you will want to ensure that you’ve parked on a level surface. Slopes and hills can skew the results of your examination, so avoid them if at all possible. You should also have gloves and a rag on hand, since the process can be a messy one. A towel will help you see the quality of your oil as well.
Testing the Oil
You can easily check the current quality of your car’s oil, and the first step is to pop open the hood. Now, look for a brightly colored ring or knob, as this indicates the location of the dipstick. It connects to a long metal or plastic band that extends into the oil pan, so remove it to see the condition of the substance. Wipe it off on the rag you procured and see if it looks golden and free of any impurities. You’ll now want to reinsert the dipstick and remove it once again to see if there’s enough in your engine.
